The Kentucky State Fair is a culminating event of yearly 4-H project work. Project work is defined by including the following: “(a) Planned work in an area of interest to the 4-H member, (b) Guided by a 4-H adult volunteer who is the project leader, (c) Aimed at planned objectives that can be attained and measured, (d) Summarized by some form of record keeping, and (e) A minimum of six hours of project instruction” (National 4-H Council, 2013). In 2023, Kentucky 4-H members exhibited and participated in 6730 4-H projects and competitions in Cloverville. Therefore, as youth spend approximately six hours in quality 4-H programs, Kentucky 4-H members spent a total of 55404 hours enhancing their skills through hands-on project work. Thirty-eight projects were from Hancock County youth with more than 200 hours of work invested.
The 4-H Thriving Model as it Relates to the Kentucky State Fair indicates youth can practice skills that link to the thriving indicators through participation in the core curriculum starting at the county or club level and then on to the Kentucky State Fair. Potential outcomes are based on core curriculum project work starting at the county or club level. The Thriving Model and the developmental context of the Ky State Fair conclude:
• Youth participating in the 4-H events at the Kentucky State Fair can learn more about their specific core curriculum interest or project area.
• Kentucky 4-H youth will have a sense of belonging as they will be at an event with other 4-H participants with the same spark.
• Kentucky 4-H youth will build positive relationships with caring 4-H Agents, specialists, and volunteers.
