2024 FCS Friday Program

Author: Gregory Drake

Planning Unit: Butler County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Family living skills continues to be identified by local extension leadership as a need in our community.  In the absence of an FCS agent I have taken on the responsibility of providing this programming.  A diversified program was developed that included a SNAP Education food demonstration, a plate it up KY food demonstration, a discussion of KEHA, and a segment for networking.  The county’s nutrition educator prepared a SNAP recipe using ingredients from our demonstration garden.  Attendees were able to sample the recipe.  The KY State University FCS agent, housed in Bowling Green, demonstrated making a Plate it up KY recipe, and provided samples.  I provided a short program on Butler County Homemakers, and invited attendees to become members.  The KY State small farms agriculture agent presented information on growing paw-paws and provided samples of paw-paw ice cream.  The group enjoyed some networking time and deserts prepared by a volunteer.  Eggs from our poultry demonstration were used in the deserts.  17 people attended the event.  They received nutrition education materials, seeds to start their own paw-paw trees, and information on the local homemaker association.  It was held at the extension office.  A paper evaluation was used to collect information on what attendees learned.  100 % of attendees responded that they increased their knowledge of healthy food they could prepare for their families and about homemakers.  82% of attendees responded that they learned something that they would use this year.  35% said they would use their paw-paw knowledge.  One attendee joined homemakers that day.  The attendees also provided a lot of suggestions on what programs they would like to see offered.
