Wash Those Hands

Author: Bethony Morris

Planning Unit: Hancock County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Hancock County Cooperative Extension Expanded Food Nutrition Assistant (EFNEP) partnered with South Hancock Elementary school PE teacher.  The kindergarten through second grade met in the gym during their PE time, it was felt that was a great time to teach the LEAP program.  This would be an opportunity to teach about physical activity along with good nutrition.

When the class first met, they took the entry survey.  There is a question on the survey that asked who should wash their hands before eating.  The kids had a hard time answering this correctly. Over half the class didn’t circle all the correct answers, they believed that the only child that needed to wash their hands was the kid petting the dog.

Germs are everywhere! This saying was used throughout all the lessons that were taught.  The children were taught about how germs can go anywhere, and how you must wash your hands to stay healthy.

After the program, the class took the exit survey, and 62% of the class knew that everyone, no matter what they may have been doing, needs to wash their hands before eating.
