The Johnson County Farmers Market was in full swing by the first of July, with 10 vendors in attendance on most days. They carried a wide verity of fruits and vegetables and amazing crafts as well. The customers were happy to see so much to choose from and had many questions about how to prepare, make nutritious meals and how to avoid waste. Many also asked questions about preserving when they bought in bulk.
The Johnson Co. NEP Senior Assistant set up a NEP Information Station Table with nutritional information, recipes and UK approved food preservation materials, along with doing a live food demonstration one day a week. The public could watch and learn how to prepare a healthy meal in person and ask questions. There would be on average 15 people in attendance during the food demonstration. On the busiest days the NEP Senior Assistant would prepare and hand out samples of a recipe to feature a vegetable being sold that day and add unique recipe cards to vegetable baskets so the buyers would have more ideas on how to prepare a new dish.
By the end of August all the regular shoppers said they looked forward to getting and preparing new recipes from the cards being added to their vegetable baskets. All who watched the food demonstrations said they loved getting the chance to try something new and started watching previously recorded food demonstrations on the Johnson County NEP FB page. The customers who asked for information on preserving their vegetables felt more confident with the information and recipes given out at the NEP Information Station Table.
