The Nutrition Education Program (NEP) in Mason County, KY began with a simple goal in mind to encourage individuals to make healthier food choices. Through a series of seven lessons taught by the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Assistant at the Mason County Cooperative Extension office, 97% of participants showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators, such as increasing their consumption of fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient dense foods.
By teaching families the importance of meal planning, budgeting, and comparing food prices, 88% of participants demonstrated improved food resource management practices. Additionally, encouraging physical activity and an active lifestyle was an integral part of EFNEP assistant’s mission. At the end of programming, 69% of participants showed improvements in physical activity behaviors.
Ensuring food safety was equally crucial. Participants learned the importance of proper food handling practices, from washing hands diligently to using meat thermometers. The result? A remarkable 69% improvement in food safety practices with families gaining confidence in their ability to prepare meals safely.
The story of NEP's success is a testament to the power of education, community support, and the determination to make a difference. Through their tireless efforts, families discovered the joy of wholesome meals, the benefits of an active lifestyle, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing how to keep their loved ones safe.
