Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living, The Nutrition Program for the Elderly provides one nutritionally balanced home-delivered or congregate dining-style meal per day to people 60 or older and their spouses. The Menifee County Senior Center, which provides nutritious meals Monday through Friday for Senior Citizens, and the Menifee County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED) assistant partnered to provide the nutrition curriculum, Healthy Choices for Every Body (HCEB) to the senior citizens in the county. In Menifee County 27% of the population are senior citizens. The SNAP-ED assistant presented seven lessons from the HCEB curriculum to fifteen senior citizens. Pre and post evaluations were conducted with the senior citizens. After completing the seven required lessons, 75% of the participants showed improvement in eating vegetables more often each day and 50% of the participants showed improvement in eating dark green vegetables more often each week. The participants stated they liked the recipes the SNAP-ED assistant presented, as well as the nutrition information delivered by the assistant.  The SNAP-ED assistant and the Menifee County Senior Center plan on partnering again in the future.
