Rising Point Acquires Food Safety Skills

Author: Sarah Spears

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

This year, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Office Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program partnered with clientele at Rising Point recovery center. The Nutrition Education Program’s “Healthy Choices for Every Body” curriculum was utilized. This curriculum serves to teach limited resource adults the importance of healthy eating, along with physical activity. Upon completion of the program, participants recognized the importance of practicing food safety. These participants, who had previously battled addiction, understood that this was an important life skill that complemented their journey toward healthier and more responsible living.

Food safety, often overlooked in the context of addiction recovery, took on new significance for these men. It became a small building block in their commitment to self-improvement and their desire to protect the well-being of themselves and their loved ones. With bi-weekly lessons, participants gained valuable insights into proper food storage, handling, and preparation techniques.

Upon completion of the program, 75 percent of the participants in the men's group demonstrated improved food safety practices. This achievement highlights the practicality and relevance of incorporating nutrition education into recovery programs. Beyond avoiding foodborne illnesses, it points out the broader benefits of instilling discipline, responsibility, and respect for oneself and others. By embracing food safety and just healthier choices as a whole, these individuals are proud to be prioritizing recovery and responsible living and are acquiring essential life skills along the way.
