Cooking Through the Calendar

Author: Kaitlyn Fryman

Planning Unit: Fleming County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Nutrition/Health/Wellness

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Fleming County Extension has been fulfilling a need of the county for quick, easy, and cost effective cooking classes. As an added bonus, the recipes used in Cooking Through the Calendar are nutritious as well. Fleming County FCS uses the recipes in the calendar released yearly by the Kentucky Nutrition Education Program in this program. This program has been offered at the Fleming County Extension Office and at the Hillsboro Christian Church Fellowship Hall to accommodate people all over the county. This program is offered at no cost to the participants with the supplies being covered by the FCS program support. Door prizes are given at each class as an extra incentive to promote the program.

We offer a traditional food demonstration where the Agent stands up front and prepares the Cooking Through the Calendar recipe of the month and goes over the nutritional benefits of the different ingredients that are used in each recipe. Questions are encouraged and welcomed during the demonstration and sampling of what has been made for an even better learning experience for all who is participating in the class. One of the best things about using the recipes from the KYNEP calendars in that each recipe is broken down with a price per recipe and price per serving. This allows participants to see the benefit of how much it would cost them to purchase the ingredients to make this meal compared to meals for their entire family at a restaurant.

Participants have thoroughly enjoyed this class. One participant had to have her arm amputated and she said she loved being apart of Cooking Through the Calendar because she learned a nutritious and easy recipe she can challenge herself to make at home and she did just that! Another participant said these recipes accommodate her dietary needs and the 'tips and tricks' handouts are so nice for her to apply to all recipes.
