Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The McLean County Farmers market has been in operation for many years and the success it has enjoyed in the past is a direct result of the hard work by the McLean County Farmers Market Vendors. A unique collaborative effort between the Farmers market vendors, a local banking institution, McLean County Cooperative Extension Service, city of Sacramento and a local church are helping the Farmers Market provide nutritious, wholesome and fresh produce to local citizens in McLean County at four locations on different day during each week. The vendors for this year’s market decided to extend their season to the end of October to maximize the fall growing season as well as marketing products for fall decorating such as mums, corn shocks and pumpkins just to name a few.
The Family and Consumer Science Agent and the Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent worked closely with vendors to educate them on safe handling techniques, variety selection, disease identification, becoming Kentucky Proud certified and regulations pertaining to selling various food and vegetable products. Meetings were conducted before the market opened and during the marketing year at the Extension office as well as the market itself so that vendors had many educational opportunities to attend. The McLean County Farmers Market vendors are committed to providing high quality fresh produce to their customers, a quality all successful markets must have so that the opportunity for repeat business presents itself over and over.
