Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Outcome: Initial Outcome

For the past two years, over 15 states have been working to establish a Food Safety Extension Network (FSEN), primarily through 1890 institutions. The three main purposes is to provide education, a repository for educational materials, and an opportunity for networking in the areas of food safety for home food preservation and retail foods. FSEN had their first on-hands, day-long workshop for Extension specialists in collaboration with all partners. Fourteen specialists from four states attended. Educational materials and information about current research about retail food safety practices, food safety culture in the work place, regulatory processes across state lines, donated foods best practices, food safety from the industry perspective, and recent food safety efforts through Cooperative Extension. Each topic was developed and hosted by different involved FSEN members and a variety of pedagogical methods were used to liven up a fairly dry topic, including participant interaction. The end survey showed a 100% knowledge increase about retail food safety culture and practices, regulatory processes, and donated food best practices. 100% of the participants said they need more current information about the regulatory processes in their states and hope there will be materials available soon for their use. FSEN hopes to offer more collaborative workshops in the future.
