Obesity often begins in childhood. According to the Kentucky Institute of Medicine, the critical health challenges facing Monroe County is that 37% of our population is obese and 72% of our county population is overweight. The Monroe County Extension Council identified the need to assist youth in developing healthy habits in nutrition and exercise as a key area of focus for Monroe County 4-H Youth Development. The 4-H Moves Program was formed by the 4-H Youth Development agent through a partnership with the physical education instructor at Tompkinsville Elementary School. For eight weeks, seventy-five elementary school youth (both boys and girls) participated in a group exercise presented by the 4-H Agent. The objectives of the program were to introduce youth to various forms of exercise and to encourage youth to begin an exercise regimen both for their physical and mental health. At the conclusion of the program, 100% of the participants had discovered a new exercise they enjoyed and would continue, 73% indicated they understood there was a connection between their health, weight, diet, and activity levels, and 75% indicated they were going to put forth a strong effort to begin a dedicated exercise program.
