Outcome: Initial Outcome

Community members of all ages need enhanced opportunities for physical and mental health. As baby boomers are entering retirement, between 2010 and 2025 the population ages 65 and over in Clinton County are projected to increase by 22.7% (KY By the Numbers, Clinton County Data Profile). One area of significant ranking from the 2019 Kentucky Extension Community Assessment was more senior citizen support programs. With an anticipated growing senior adult population and the identified need for more programs, Clinton County Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Council members suggested the implementation of Bingocize®. Bingocize® is an evidence-based health promotion program that strategically combines the game of bingo, health education, and/or exercise. Groups meet twice per week for ten weeks, with each 45-60 minute session consisting of exercises (range of motion, balance, muscle strengthening, and endurance exercises) and/or health education questions.

In Fall 2022, 7 participants completed the nutrition and exercise unit. 100% of participants noted satisfaction with the quality of the program and indicated that they had gained additional knowledge related to healthy eating while learning exercises they could practice and implement at home. In Spring 2023, 15 participants completed the Covid-19 unit. 93% expressed satisfaction with the quality of the program. 100% indicated that it was beneficial to review Covid-19 protocols while exercising for increased flexibility, balance, and mobility.

Participants shared the following comments:

“Having several health issues, one being osteoporosis, it was exercise I could do without equipment and was easy on my back. The information we learned each session helpful too. I looked forward to going to get together with my friends.”

“Bingocize was so much more than bingo! The exercises were so helpful to my old joints and the social activity was great for my mental health! Always felt better after attending!”

“Got the exercises I needed. Plus it was really helpful with my arthritis. Looked forward to the sessions.”

“Wow! What can you say about a class that has it all? Not only do you get in much needed movement, you get to socialize and play bingo as well! Plus, Bingocize was easily carried over at home.”; and

“Bingocize was simply fun—incorporating education, exercise, social time, and of course bingo!”.

Participants are actively recruiting friends to join the next series and are quick to share how much they are maintaining exercises at home. Based on its success, Bingocize® and other senior support programs will become a regular part of local Extension programming.
