Success StoryEstablishing Grayson County Farmer's Market as a Community Feature

Establishing Grayson County Farmer's Market as a Community Feature

Author: Whitney Carman

Planning Unit: Grayson County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Diversified Agriculture and Rural Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Grayson County Farmer’s Market has been a viable market for over 17 years. It has served the community fresh local produce yearly and is a staple in the summer. After several years of low turnout and participation with market vendors, the Farmer’s Market moved to the Extension office, in expectation that it would grow and thrive, thus making it a feature of the community. In 2021 and 2022, the market did well for growers at the Extension Office, each collectively raising over $20,000, increasing our market membership from 3 to 20, and re-branding the market. Throughout the process the market was able to still help seniors have access to fresh local produce through the Senior Farmer's Market Voucher program. However, the idea of wanting a permanent structure in town was still a priority for market members and community partners.

In spring of 2023, the growers along with the ANR Agent, and community partners, asked the City of Leitchfield and County to set up at the City Hall and at the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in Leitchfield. While organizing this, local elected officials were enthusiastic about the growth and development of the market. The opportunity for a land purchase in the middle of town came up, the city and county purchased it with the idea that a permanent farmer’s market structure would be built there.

With this exciting news, the Leitchfield Mayor, County Judge Executive, ANR Agent, Tourism, Market members are going to work together to get concepts for the market structure and apply for the Agriculture Development funds to help with the cost of the structure. With a permanent structure, there are many opportunities for growth and new ideas for the market.

While the first part of this long-term goal has been established- the other part of this project is to have develop a great working relationship between the City, County, Farmer’s Market association, Tourism, and other community partners to provide easily access fresh local produce, goods and services for Grayson County residents.
