Major Program: Super Star Chef

Plan of Work: Enhancing Life Skills and Building Consumer Awareness

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Greenup County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent collaborated with the Greenup County 4-H Youth Development Agent to offer the SuperStar Chef Camp program to 14 students.   Two volunteers worked with the students in a hands-on educational setting to teach important life skills.  A pre-test/post-test evaluation was conducted to determine learning outcomes.

As a result of the program, students gained the following knowledge and skills:

  1. 100% identified the right way to hold a knife.
  2. 100% identified how germs get transferred to food.
  3. 100% identified the four steps to safe food.
  4. 100% identified how many minutes a day they should be physically active to stay healthy.
  5. 100% identified the correct technique for accurately measuring ingredients.
  6. 100% recognized the best way to clean fruits and vegetables before eating.

Following the program, students also gained confidence in their food preparation skills:

  1. 80% more students agreed that they could help make a family meal.
  2. 75% more students agreed that they could cut up food using knife.
  3. 75% more students agreed that they could measure ingredients correctly.

In addition, as a result of attending the SuperStar Chef Camp program, students plan to make the following behavior changes:

  1. 100% plan to drink more water.
  2. 100% plan to be more physically active.
  3. 100% plan to eat more fruits and vegetables.
  4. 100% plan to try new foods.

Feedback was collected from parents regarding the outcomes of the program.  One parent stated “After day one my son came home and made TWO batches of Roasted Breakfast Potatoes.  It was so great to see how much he had learned in just one day at SuperStar chef camp.”  Another parent stated “Last night we enjoyed a family dinner prepared by our daughter after two days of cooking camp.  She was confident in the kitchen, and we all loved sharing the meal together.  She even got up and packed my lunch this morning with a fruit and yogurt parfait.”
