The SNAC Commodities Fact Sheets and Videos have been a valuable resource in addressing food insecurity and promoting nutrition education in Kentucky. With the rising cost of living and the impact of natural disasters, more households are relying on food bank commodities to supplement their grocery budgets. However, many recipients struggle to make nutritious and delicious meals with these resources. That's where the SNAC Commodities Fact Sheets and Videos come in.

Developed in partnership with the Kentucky Nutrition Education Program and the Kentucky State Nutrition Action Council, these educational resources were launched in September 2022 to empower individuals to cook nutritious and tasty meals using food bank commodities. The fact sheets and videos are available on the KYNEP's website and YouTube channel, providing step-by-step instructions and helpful tips on cooking various food types commonly obtained through Kentucky food banks and pantries.

Despite being recently introduced, the videos have already garnered hundreds of views, indicating the potential for greater engagement in the future. The materials are expected to have an even broader impact as Extension Agents and SNAP Educators become familiar with them through upcoming training sessions and distribution efforts. These agents and educators play a vital role in food distribution across communities and can use the fact sheets as educational tools when distributing food boxes and bags.

The fact sheets, inspired by the USDA Food Fact Sheets, provide nutrition facts, preparation and storage tips, and recipe inspiration. They can be easily included in food boxes and bags, reaching individuals with limited resources and educating them about food and nutrition. The materials also serve as a gateway to other Extension programs, linking recipients to additional resources and support.

By encouraging food bank recipients to maximize the use of their received food items, the SNAC Commodities Fact Sheets and Videos are addressing food insecurity and promoting healthier eating habits. These resources not only provide practical cooking instructions but also empower individuals to make the most of what they have. Through education and access to nutritious meals, the project aims to improve the quality of life for Kentuckians facing food insecurity.

By leveraging partnerships, embracing technology, and utilizing existing distribution channels, the SNAC Commodities Fact Sheets and Videos are making a significant impact in Kentucky's fight against food insecurity. The project demonstrates the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing pressing social issues, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more resilient community.
