Community Yoga Partnership Develops Youth Yoga Interest and Teen Yoga Instructors

Author: Ryan Farley

Planning Unit: Fayette County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Improving Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Fostering healthy lifestyles within the youth of Woodford County has been identified as a priority within the community. As youth are inclined to spend more and more time in front of screens, providing experiences that focus on healthy habit development is one way that 4-H can distinguish itself as an effective positive youth development organization. With this in mind, Woodford County 4-H partnered with a community yoga studio, Elemental Yoga, to plan and implement a yoga workshop for youth in the county. During the workshop, Woodford County High School students, enrolled in a co-op class that allows them to complete their yoga instructor certification, led four 30-minute sessions that included yoga games, breathing and meditation, yoga flow and yoga with music. Youth participants also took part in a nutritional snack lesson, where they learned about nutrition and food safety. After completing the workshop, participants were asked to evaluate the experience. 100% of the participants communicated that they had learned something new about yoga, had fun, are interested in doing more yoga in the future, got better at yoga and felt healthier after participating. 75% of the participants communicated that they had tried something and learned something new and felt included in the workshop. For the participants, this workshop provided a great opportunity to explore healthy lifestyle choices available and will hopefully foster future interest in yoga and nutrition.
