Union County now has 28 teens who are certified in CPR. CPR or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a lifesaving procedure that is performed if a persons heart stops beating. If CPR is performed it can double or triple chances of survival. According to the American Heart Association in one year alone, 436,000 Americans die from a cardiac arrest. Bystander CPR improves survival. Most often out of hospital cardiac arrests will occur in homes at 73.4%, public settings 16.3% and nursing homes 10.3%. Union County 4-H partnered with the local Morganfield Fire Department, Chief Rick Millikan and other first responders came out on a Saturday afternoon to teach the teens this wonderful life saving class. An evaluation was taken at the end of the course. There was 1(19 yr old), 1 (18 yr old), 3 (17 yr old), 4 (16 yr old), 4 (15 yr old), 6 (14 yr old), 6 (13 yr old), and 3 (12 yr old). The following question was asked: "What was your favorite part of this course?" Responses were: Involvement of the community; Hands on CPR; Just learning all the skills just in case I ever need them; informational videos. Question: I am confident I can use the skills the course taught me. 100% responded that they are confident. This has been a high interest class and we plan to continue to partner with our local community to offer these needed life skills classes.
