Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Center for Disease Control reports that physical activity can help with weight control but that there are other great benefits that come with an increase of physical activity. These include: lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression and even some cancers. In an effort to encourage physical activity and promote healthy habits, the Barren County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences started a weekly Walking Club. Participants gather on Monday mornings for a walk to get the week off to a positive start. When the weather is nice, walking participants meet outside at various park locations throughout the county. In the event of inclement weather, participants meet at a local health care facility where there is a free walking track that can be used. During the walk, participants are encouraged to do what feels right to them. There is no certain speed, distance or time that has to be met. It is a very inclusive and encouraging program. At the end of month one, participants shared that they were enjoying the weekly meetings and that they wished to continue another month. All participants shared that they had increased their physical activity by attending Walking Club. Seventy-five percent of participants shared that they were not doing regular walking exercises before starting Walking Club. Additionally, one hundred percent of participants reported a positive increase to their mental health. Participants are looking forward to continuing and will be monitoring positive changes to their health.
