Plan of Work: Increasing Agricultural Systems In Washington County
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Horticulture How-To Series was developed for those that were interested in learning by doing. One such program was growing oyster mushrooms. Participants learned about the nutritional value of oyster mushrooms, examples, and varieties, how to sterilize the substrate and the ins and outs of what to do to get the oyster mushrooms to fruit. After the initial program participants made mushroom substrate bales out of moistened pine pellet bedding and inoculated it with oyster grain spawn. Participants took their oyster spawn bales home and are following the instructions to get them to fruit.
After the class, a participant came to the horticulture agent to tell him as a result of this class she and her husband planned to purchase supplies and grow oyster mushrooms to sell. Her quote "Finding out how easy and cheaply we can produce these high-end mushrooms we are definitely going to increase our product line into mushrooms this growing season"
