Healthy Choices for Lawrence County Families

Lawrence County Extension Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Senior Assistant partnered with Lawrence County Family Resource Youth Service Coordinators (FRYSC) to help families with nutrition education. A total of fourteen (14) parents participated in Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum.   Seven lessons included but not limited to: MyPlate, Breakfast, Know the Limits, Meal Planning, Reading Labels and Food Safety. As a result, 100% of participants showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators, 71% drinking regular soda less often, 86% showed improvement in physical activity. Also 93% of participants showed improvement in one or more food safety practices (i.e., washing hands before preparing food, washing all items and surfaces after cutting raw meat, thawing frozen food properly, or using a meat thermometer) and 100% showed improvement in food resource management practices (i.e., cook dinner at home, compare food prices, plan meals before shopping, look in refrigerator or cupboard and making a list before shopping).
