Major Program: Artistic & Essential Skill Development
Plan of Work: Enhancing Life Skills and Building Consumer Awareness
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Greenup Arts has responded to interest expressed by students and adults about learning to play the ukulele. Greenup County 4-H has two teens who participated in the 4-H online ukulele club and two local schools are using the ukulele in their music classes. The ukulele is an affordable instrument, not difficult to play, and is a good beginner instrument for learning to play in an ensemble and/or accompany a singer. For these reasons, Greenup Arts has established a Ukulele Club, in partnership with 4-H, that meets monthly at the Extension Office. Youth who enroll in the club will also enroll in 4-H with a special interest topic. An adult leader has been identified and has begin the process of becoming an adult volunteer for 4-H - specific to this club. The Community Arts agent will continue to lead the club meetings along side the adult volunteer until he is comfortable with leading on his own.
Each club meeting will have the following components:
· Sign-in
· Tune your instrument (or an instrument that you are borrowing)
· Lesson time
Topics will include musicianship, music literacy, leadership, life skills, and wellness.
· Special guests who will perform and/or share a performance story
· Mentor/Mentee time
· Rehearsals will begin after we have songs we can do together
· Wrap up and notes for next meeting
This monthly process will be followed in order to provide training with life skills, musicianship, leadership, communication, and responsibility. All skill levels are welcome in the club due to the mentor/mentee process. Age is not the determining factor for mentorship. This allows for club members of all ages to participate and share their knowledge and skill with each other. Progress and experience will be tracked in order to determine long term successes.
A long term goal of this group is to have a performing group that can provide entertainment at local meetings and events.
