Major Program: Science, Engineering and Technology 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Environmental Quality

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Delivering high-quality programming for Woodford County school youth has been the backbone of the Woodford County 4-H program. With lessons focusing on Consumerism, Science, Engineering, Technology, Communications and Leadership, Woodford County 4-H School clubs serve 4th through 8th graders in seven schools in the county, including four public elementary schools, one private elementary school, one private K-8 school and one public middle school. Working alongside teachers who understand the value 4-H brings to their classroom, six or seven monthly lessons are planned, deliberately scheduled to align with the core-content being taught in the classroom. Always hands-on, these lessons provide an opportunity to enhance the content being taught, many times “bringing alive” the students are actively learning about. Upon completion of the 2017-2018 4-H School Club year, participating teachers were surveyed regarding the impact the Woodford County 4-H School Club program has on their classroom. All 21 teachers surveyed ranked their overall satisfaction with the program as either “Great” or “Excellent” and several commented that 4-H School Clubs “helps enhance our social studies curriculum” and that it “serves to enrich what is already being taught as well as fill in holes on topics not well covered with our curriculum.” Other comments from teachers recognize the importance of having 4-H in their classroom, commenting that “it teaches real-world skills and character education,” and that “4-H is an excellent program that educates my students on very important issues and teaches life skills.” Building a successful 4-H School Club Program has only strengthened and enhanced the bond between the Woodford County students and Woodford County 4-H.
