According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion only 21 percent of American youth meet the current Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. This is no shock given that the average child spends 6 or more hours per day using electronic devices. Studies have shown this can lead to an inability to focus, insomnia and a drop in school performance. To address this, issue the Fayette County Extension Office partnered with Beaumont Middle School in Fayette County to institute a series of nutrition education classes focusing on healthy eating and physical activity using various 4H curricula. Each lesson featured physical activities for the students to engage in as well as various tips for families that were sent home with the students. According to beginning and ending data comparison of a national reporting system at the end of the series 39% of the students had reported a decrease in their electronic media viewing hours and 78% had increased their physical activity.
