Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2021, I began a cooking program at Western Middle school, with 60 kids participating throughout the school year in groups it proved to be extremely successful. Western Middle School is located in the historic Portland neighborhood of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. At the conclusion of the program, the Family Resource Coordinator and I met to discuss the needs to the youth and strategized on how to address some of the gaps in regards to life skills that the kids have so the needs could be addressed in 2022. Many of the students, enhanced and/or developed their cooking skills but the issues of financial literacy, household management, nutrition, physical wellness. As a result, we decided to present a home economics after-school program and  yielded 16 sign-ups. We began with cooking, for the new participants, and now we are sewing, then on to financial literacy. In the sewing portion; participants created a service project for their peers and will be offering free mending services for students who have hole in their favorite sweater, t-shirts, and other clothing items. They also have volunteered to participate in the county fair in the sewing and crocheting categories.
