Baking is an art as well as a science.  It is precise as well as intuitive.  The ingredients that go into baking are simple—flour, leavening agents, liquid, salt, and others.  When combined, these ingredients form something wonderfully complex and delicious.   Recipes are often passed down through generations; but the skill is not.  Because of recent the pandemic, more people have turned to baking.  Because of the interest, the FCS Agents from Todd and Trigg counties collaborated to teach “Ready, Set, Bake!” homemaker leader training in two different locations in the Pennyrile Area, using the Super Star Baking Chef curriculum as a basis for instruction.  This class focused on pie crusts, biscuits, and scones

A total of 34 participants completed an end of the workshop evaluation.  Of those answering the survey, 100% agreed they had a better understanding of the role ingredients play in baking; 97% better understood the techniques involved in making pie crusts; 94% better understood how to make a meringue; 80% knew more about how to practice food safety when baking; and 97% learned how to knead, roll, and or shape dough.

Eighty-two percent reported they planned to make biscuits from scratch; 62% planned to make pie and/or pie crust from scratch; and 56% planned to make meringue; and 91% planned to make scones.

The agents agreed that the baking class was a success and will be looking into offering more baking classes in the future.
