A 2013 CDC report shows that Kentucky ranks 49 out of 50 states, putting us next to lowest on fruit and vegetable consumption by adults compared to other states. The same study showed adolescents to have lower consumption of fruits and vegetables than their adult counterparts. Health Rocks Day Camp is a week-long summer camp for 8-12 year old children. The camp is a partnership between extension, school elementary family resources centers, and other community agencies.  During the week approximately 25 adult and 50 teen volunteers help with the camp.  One of the main emphasis of the camp is to focus on the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables by education of the health benefits from consumption and identification of both fruits and vegetables.  My Plate – A Yummy Curriculum was used during the week.  Pre and post surveys were done that encompassed both fruit and vegetable education indicators and identification of both fruits and vegetables.

The completed surveys from camp showed 28 of the 30 children or 93% improved 1 or more knowledge or skills necessary to choose foods according to Federal Dietary Recommendations. 57% or 17 of 30 children improved 2 or more knowledge or skills. 17% or 5 of 30 children improved 3 or more knowledge or skills. 7% or 2 of 30 children improved 4 or more knowledge or skills.  One mother stated that her child was much more willing to try new fruits and vegetables now.
