Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Plan of Work: Educating Youth and Adults on Life Skills, safety, personal and family development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Bourbon County Extension clientele attendance of traditional programming was restricted during the pandemic and proved to be slow returning   to pre-pandemic numbers.   In a search for a way of reconnecting, the Family & Consumer Science Agent and the SNAP-Ed Program Assistant Senior
decided to offer a cooking through the 2022 Food+Nutrition calendar monthly via Facebook Live.

Each month the featured recipe preparation was demonstrated for viewing.  The demo was shared with the public on the first Friday of the month at noon on Facebook.  The program was titled “Bourbon Bite-Sized Learning”  The short segments shared the following information for each recipe:

  1. Tips for preparation
  2. Nutritional qualities of each recipe
  3. Suggestions for adapting the recipe to individual family needs whether that be special diets or individual preferences
  4. Preparation times and short cuts
  5. Possible substitutions for ingredients when not available
  6. Advantages of using locally grown ingredients

The demonstrations took place at various locations throughout the county, i.e. County Fair, Farmer’s Market, privately owned markets, and community events.   The production was taken to the clients physically as well as the media viewing.

During the calendar year of 2022, Bourbon Bite-Sized Learning had 2,439 views.   One viewer’s comment was  “I look forward to this each month.  Thank you for doing this.  I get to watch at my convenience instead of yours.”  This average of over 200 per month has proven successful for reaching working clientele as well as those with busy schedules.  Bourbon Bite-Sized Learning is looking to grow in 2023.
