In an effort to promote easy changes that have a big impact on the environment, the Barren County Cooperative Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences and the Barren County Program Assistant offered a class on DIY Beeswax Wraps Class. During the class, participants learned how plastic wrap has the potential to be harmful to the environment and that simple changes can go a long way. Plastic wrap is a very common items that is used in many households. An easy and effective alternative to plastic wrap is beeswax wraps. Beeswax wraps can be made at home using one hundred percent cotton fabric, beeswax beads, pine resin and jojoba oil. Once made, the wraps are easy to clean and remain reusable for up to one year. Bowls, produce and many other items can be covered with beeswax wraps to keep them fresh, and they are completely harmless. A total of seventeen individuals participated in the class. Of those individuals, one hundred percent indicated that they were made aware of the benefits of environmentally friendly alternatives like beeswax wraps. Additionally, all participants shared that they felt the class was beneficial and that they were going to use the wrap they had made in the class. Seventy-five percent stated that they were planning to make additional wraps on their own time using the recipe provided. At a later date, one participant reported stated: "Since attending the beeswax wrap class, I have made 4 additional wraps in different sizes. This has helped to reduce the amount of plastic wrap I use when storing leftover foods."
