Flooded Ag Equipment Reborn

Author: Shad Baker

Planning Unit: Letcher County CES

Major Program: Flood Relief & Recovery

Plan of Work: AGRICULTURE, NATURAL RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT--2020

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The historic flooding in Eastern Kentucky is impacting many small horticultural producers particularly hard because of equipment losses. Most are small operators with tight margins and a very limited ability to pay for replacements. A brainstorming Zoom between University of Kentucky ANR Agents, Specialists and the Kentucky Horticulture Council's Cindy Finneseth led to a collaborative partnership geared towards repairing flooded equipment for free. The Hort Council partnered with the Vo-Ag programs in Western Hills and Montgomery County High School to transport the equipment, have it repaired by students and then returned to the counties. The Agents helped publicize the program among producers and provide storage between pick-up trips. So far, producers in Breathitt, Clay, Knott, Letcher, Magoffin, Perry and Pike Counties have taken part in the program, with 58 pieces of equipment collected from 21 producers involved in the program.
