Homeowners have few unbiased resources when looking for solutions to lawn and garden problems. Many automatically turn to applications of chemicals or fertilizers that may not be necessary for treatment or they will consult local businesses that are motivated to sell products. Excess products ultimately become groundwater contaminants contributing to pollution concerns. Greener gardening practices has recently been hot topics with public education heading up the most likely avenue to change attitudes and behaviors.
The Henderson County Extension horticulture program provides soil sampling, education, and diagnostic services to help residents make greener, environmentally sound decisions that helps reduce pesticide use and save consumers money. In many cases disease or insect problems have no immediate remedy or do not require treatment. Proper advice and education not only protect the environment but also can save homeowners from unnecessary expenditures.
In the past year the Henderson County Horticulture program provided diagnostic advice, educational information or soil testing recommendations to over 650 residents including 44 plant/insect diagnostics, 91 soil samples, 396 phone consultations, and 192 home site visits. The positive impact on the environment and the savings incurred are a significant benefit not only to the immediate recipients but all residents residing in Henderson County.
