In years past, youth that wanted to participate in the county ham project from Greenup County had to store their hams at Boyd County due to the lack of a ham house in the county. Community partners- Greenup County Farm Bureau, Greenup County FFA Chapter and Greenup County 4-H are working together to construct a ham house here in Greenup County to hopefully increase participation in the county ham project since the time needed to travel of 30 minutes minimum each way to the next county will be eliminated. Greenup County Farm Bureau has donated $2,500 for the construction of the ham house, which will be competed by the construction class of students enrolled in FFA. The goal of having the ham house here in the county is to increase the participation to 5 youth this year and continuing to grow each year. We plan to host workshops in cooperation with the Greenup County FFA to allow the general public (youth and adults) to cure hams as well to increase their knowledge and awareness of this skill. We are hopeful that the construction of the ham house will be complete to use it for this years ham project.
