The poverty level for Kentucky is 16% according to the 2020 census data report with food insecurity coming in at 13.8 % both are over the national average. Goodwill Industries of Kentucky conducts a program called RISE (Reintegrating Individuals Successfully Every Day). The RISE program is offered in Louisville, Lexington, Pikeville and Bowling Green. The RISE program is virtual two-week program that help assist disadvantage job seekers tools to promote them back into the workforce and communities. Throughout the two weeks they gain knowledge in behavior changes, health, nutrition, job skills, financial literacy and communication skills. Goodwill Rise and the Nutrition Education Program (NEP) from University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension partner together to reach RISE clients with nutrition and health topics.
Logan County Senior Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program Educator Paige Alexander teaches the nutrition and health lessons for the Western Kentucky region. Paige taught four cohorts that lasted two weeks from July to September. By teaching nutrition and health topics RISE participants gained knowledge in safe food handling procedures, budgeting on limited income for food, meal planning to help with food insecurity and eating nutritious meals while on a limited resource. By gaining knowledge through the Nutrition Education Program lessons participants increased by thirty-four percent consumption on vegetables, fifty percent improved safe food handling practices, and thirty- seven percent improved on resource management by meal planning and budgeting.
The RISE program is successful partnership with the Nutrition Education Program by implementing the purpose that the Nutrition Education Program was built on. To help limited resource individuals to gain access to nutritious foods and healthy lifestyles. In the four cohorts that Paige had she graduated thirty-six adults . The Goodwill RISE program is a great attribute to the Nutrition Education Program partnership.
