Author: Sherry Becknell

Planning Unit: Owsley County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Owsley County Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program Assistant partnered with the Owsley County Elementary School second grade class on encouraging new tasting.  During this time children were encouraged to try a different food and report to the class on the taste and texture. The program lasted six weeks and the assistant had the children prepare a healthy recipe each week for tasting. During this exercise the children were taught food safety, measuring skills and how to follow a recipe. After the food preparation the children had to give the recipe a “Hello Bite”.

When the program ended the class entire class reported that they did not judge food based on color and texture and were willing to taste different foods, each student had reported on a at least one new food per week.
