Fruit is the Key

According to the Centers for disease control Kentucky ranks 48th out of 50 in fruit and vegetable consumption. During the school year children in grades 1st through 6th participated in the Nutrition Education Program "Professor Popcorn". Through the partnership between the Owsley County Board of Education and the Cooperative Extension Service.

This program offers participant’s education about liMy Plate" as well as proper amounts of physical activity needed to be healthy. Students in 4th grade, following six hours of lessons improved their fruit and vegetable consumption by nearly half. Along with the schools fresh fruit and vegetable program, a positive impact is coming into focus. One student stated that “since I have learned the importance of fruits and vegetables, I will now make sure I have some kind of fruit in my backpack for school every morning.
