The Bell County SNAP-Ed Assistant Senior partnered with Just Family Adult Daycare utilizing the Healthy Choices for Every Body Curriculum. Sixteen adults participated in the program. Upon entry 12% of the adult participants were practicing food resource management. They checked the refrigerator and cupboards before shopping, wrote out a grocery list, compared prices and cooked dinner at home. During the seven required lessons taught, each participant was able to use MyPlate as a guide to plan healthier meals, read nutrition facts labels and compare foods to determine the cheaper and healthier purchases. Also, checking their refrigerator and cupboards before making a grocery list to make sure they have all ingredients for meals planned and sticking to the list to stay on budget. They also found that cooking more meals at home would save them money and is the healthier option. When exiting the program, 100% of the participants showed an improvement in one or more food resource management practices.
Adults who participated in the Healthy Choices for Every Body series showed statistically significant improvements from pre to post survey in how often they compared prices before buying food, shopped with a grocery list, planned meals, checked cupboards before shopping and cooked dinner at home more times a week. One participant stated, “Since participating in your program, I have started comparing foods for cheaper prices and looking at labels for healthier choices. I make a grocery list and stick to it. Budgeting our money by planning meals has helped us to not run out of money through the month. Me and my Husband both feel better since I’ve been cooking more healthier meals at home.”
