During the Fun on the Farm workshop, in the fall, Hopkins County was able to enjoy the outdoors and gain knowledge on where their food comes from and how it is produced. The goal for the workshop was for the youth participants to experience the joys and discomforts of farm life by visiting a local agritourism business, a greenery and learning healthy eating tips.  All of which were successfully completed throughout the day. The agritourism business consisted of a pick your own pumpkin patch, corn maze, learning about popcorn, grain systems, and a petting zoo. The youth were excited to take the kernels off the cob for popcorn and then learn they were going to taste test the popcorn. They were also able to pick their own pumpkin to take home so later they could use the seeds from them to grow their own. Next on the agenda was a trip to Metcalf’s Nursery. Here, they toured his business and learned how it operates.  The youth were able to plant their own flowers to take home as a gift! 

After, Hopkins County Fun on the Farm Workshop made their way back to the Extension Office for lunch, prepared by the Hopkins County Livestock Group.  Once they had finished eating, the FCS, Agent, Katherine Jury, partnered to help share the MyPlate and to help demonstrate where their food they just ate came from. Lastly, youth were able to make corn husk doll.  This activity taught them about the history of corn husk dolls and how you are able to use all aspects of plants including their byproducts.  Some things that participants put on the surveys that they learned include: there are different types of corn, how to grow plants, corn comes in red and blue, that you can eat cocoa beans and that popcorn comes on a cob.  Hopkins County was able to have eleven outstanding participants for this event!  This proved to be a successful first time workshop that will continue on throughout the years.
