Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership – 4-H Youth Development
Plan of Work: Building life skills among all ages
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Breckinridge County is a rural community with the poverty level of 18.3% of households. In addition, over 50% of the students in the county school systems are on free or reduced lunches. Many families look to local agencies for assistance and support for learning and family development opportunities.
Summer camp provides an opportunity for youth to develop life skills such as self-care, responsibility, and teamwork. Also, camp keeps youth engaged in learning while not in school with activities like swimming, cooking, and arts and crafts. Through a group effort from the Extension District Board, agents and volunteer leaders, Breckinridge County sent 23 campers, 3 teens and 5 adult volunteers to West Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, in June 2022. To help make camp accessible to all, the Extension District Board partially funded registration fees and provided transportation. Additionally, the 4-H Council, Homemakers Council, and Community Action offered camp scholarships. A total of $5,447was provided to make camp affordable for local families. In addition, local camp leaders provided leadership and materials to provide free educational classes such as painting, leather crafting, fiber arts, and needle crafts.
4-H summer camp allows young people to travel away from home and sharpen and practice self-care skills while in a safe, structured environment. Local leadership continues to invest and value this life shaping program, which benefits youth and families of Breckinridge County.
