In October of 2017, 4 teens from Elliott County Shooting Sports attended the fall coaches certification weekend at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center in Jabez, KY. Prior to this training Elliott County only had 2 certified teen coaches. The four teens that attended the certification workshop were inspired by the opportunity for leadership opportunities in the local and state shooting sports organization. After becoming certified these teens came back to Elliott County and began working on spearheading community service projects for the club. They are currently working with Elliott County High School agriculture department on creating community boxes for the needy in our county. Not only have they made community service a priority for the Elliott County Shooting Sports club, but they have began taking leadership roles on our shooting sports teen council. These teens work tirelessly in and out of practice to recruit and promote shooting sports to our community.
In April 3 teen coaches applied and were accepted to be teen leaders at Shooting Sports Camp. They represented our county well and taught over 300 kids how to safely handle firearms and archery equipment. Numerous individuals commented on how they were always doing more than what was asked of them and how respectful and helpful they were. One of the teen coaches said, "Becoming a certified teen coach has brought me out of my comfort zone. It has given me opportunities to learn how to be a leader and how to be comfortable in front of groups of people."
