Author: Tad Campbell

Planning Unit: Entomology

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

District 1 Agriculture and Natural Resources/Horticulture Agents had requests by local clientele of programming efforts to discuss estate planning for the family farm.   A two-part program was developed to discuss aspects of estate planning as it relates to agriculture and the family farm.   A total of eight sessions were developed to cover important topics of estate planning.   The program would offer four winter/spring sessions and conclude with four fall sessions to dive deeper into each topic selected as discussion points.   Over 120 participants registered for the program, with some counties hosting watch sites at the office.   The program was designed to offer estate planning information via a web-based approach to allow participants the opportunity to join at their location for a more efficient structure to both clientele and presenters.   Topics for the first round of presentations were:  Taxes, Basics of Estate Planning, Wills/POA, Transitioning the Family Farm.    The structure allowed participants to choose sessions of importance to attend, each session was recorded for later showing, and during live session recordings the participants could engage with the speakers to ask questions.  Each of the first four sessions were well attended with over 85 local clients taking part.  The program was offered in 20 counties across the eastern part of the state.   The fall sessions are being finalized by the committee to offer a continued success to the program.   Lots of feedback from those taking part in the sessions has been positive and presenters have acknowledge being contacted by program participants for more specialized information.   Planning ahead for your estate is difficult in many ways, but the program is designed to help prepare participants to ask the right questions to those they are working with for the estate planning phase.
