Who doesn’t love homemade bread, fresh out of the oven? In an effort to jump start extension programs after a Covid slump, the Crittenden County FCS agent and 2 extension homemakers decided to teach a breads series. There are many health benefits to baking your own bread. It is guaranteed fresh, it has no harmful preservatives, you have control over making the bread as nutritious as possible, kneading can be relaxing, it is less expensive and many more reasons. We decided to assemble a booklet of our favorite bread recipes. The classes were biscuits, muffins and yeast breads. At each class the participant (8) made their own batch of bread and learn new skills, such as cutting in shortening with a pastry blender, dredging fruit with flour in muffins and kneading dough. Following the classes, the participants requested the group continue as a cooking club. They listed several ideas on their evaluations and a team of homemakers are working on organizing the club to begin in the fall. One hundred percent of participants have made some of the bread at home. One class member said, “I made the biscuits for my family, and they said they were Loveless Café (restaurant in Nashville, known for their biscuits) worthy!”
