Planning Unit: Todd County CES
Major Program: Substance Use Prevention and Recovery General
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Todd County Nutrition Education Program (NEP) Assistant offered Healthy Choices for Everybody classes at Genesis, a residential treatment program in Hopkinsville, sponsored by Pennyroyal Center. Genesis East (Men’s Facility) and Genesis West (Women’s Facility) address both substance use and mental health issues to help clients on their road to recovery. The Genesis Director thought Healthy Choices for Everybody would be a good addition to their program. To ensure clients receive the seven core lessons and graduate them during their time at the center, the Todd County NEP Assistant taught two different classes each week.
During October through December 2021, the Todd NEP Assistant taught Healthy Choices for Everybody at the men’s facility. Thirty-one clients graduated the program.
Results from post-surveys showed:
100% of participants showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators.
84% of participants showed improvement in one or more food resource management practices.
74% of participants showed improvement in one or more physical activity behaviors.
71% of participants showed improvement in one or more food safety practices.
Each participant received a folder with copies of each lesson as well as healthy, budget-friendly recipes. Upon completion of the program participants, received kitchen tools to use to encourage them to continue cooking healthy at home.
