Breakfast at School

The Johnson County Senior SNAP-Ed Assistant started two 8th grade Life Skills classes making a total of 36 students. The first class started at 8:15am and the second started at 9:05. When asked if they had eaten breakfast 20 students said they did not eat because they did not have time in the mornings and another group of 4 students said they didn’t like to eat breakfast.

At this point we were learning about the important benefits of eating breakfast every day. We talk about how breakfast makes them more alert, gives them more energy and helps them perform better in school as well as controlling their weight. For our food demo we made omelets. We also had a selection of cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach and salsa to choose from as an addition to the recipe. All 36 students made a small omelet and chose different ingredients to add taste. Out of the 36 students 25 said they were excited to learn how quick and easy it was to make an omelet and said they would make them at home for themselves and their family.

The 4 students that previously said they didn’t like to eat breakfast, now said they would start eating different foods like fruits with bagels, yogurt and other choices in their cafeteria. Two students talked about how they felt better in the mornings after giving breakfast a chance.
