I began writing a weekly market update in April of 2020 as a way to continue communicating regularly with beef cattle industry stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fall of that same year, I transitioned this into a partnership with colleagues at Mississippi State University and the University of Arkansas. Each week, we alternate writing Cattle Market Notes Weekly. By taking this approach, I can write a market article every three weeks, but my clientele receive a market outlook article every Monday afternoon. Cattle market notes is an excellent example of collaboration across states to leverage impact. Since Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arkansas are largely cow-calf and feeder cattle states, clientele receive content that is more focused on the sectors of the beef market that apply in the South. This tends to set Cattle Market Notes apart from other cattle market newsletters and publications.
As in-person extension programming has increased during 2021 and 2022, the opportunities to promote the Cattle Market Notes Weekly newsletter have greatly increased. The direct reach of cattle market notes is now over 900 email addresses, which has increase by more than 275 from last year. Because the newsletter distribution list includes several list-serves and is forwarded to many other individuals and list-serves, total reach typically exceeds 1,400 individuals each week.
The newsletter also provides timely opportunities for agricultural and natural resource agents to include content in their newsletters and articles are often used for UK's Off-the-Hoof publication. The same occurs in other states as the Ohio Beef Cattle Letter runs our article most every week. The reach also includes several writers for popular press as our material often shows us in Beef Magazine, Feedlot Magazine, and the Southeast Farm Press.
