Maximizing Your Dollars in Retirement

Author: Edith Lovett

Planning Unit: Pulaski County CES

Major Program: Securing Financial Stability (general)

Plan of Work: Managing In Tough Times

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

More than 300 participants learned how to identify different types of expenses, such as fixed, flexible and occasional expenses from the classes on Maximizing Your Dollars in Retirement. They also were encouraged to  plan and save for those occasional expenses, and buy those occasional items when they are on sale at stores, such as Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, Halloween Decorations, birthday gifts etc.  Participants that work at a regular job responded they were already living on a fixed income and watched their spending; only those involved in sales or other jobs with commissions said they would have to adjust to a fixed income when they retire. Some of the most significant things reported they could apply to their living now was having only one vehicle when they lived alone, (don't want to get rid of mates vehicle when they die),  moving to a smaller home when all children have moved away to save on utilities, taxes, insurance, etc.  The majority of the participants had not evaluated how many nights their children had spent at home, once they had moved out.   In tracking expenses, clients with pets were amazed how much money they were spending on their pets for health care, grooming, boarding when out of town, food and other costs..
