Major Program: Family and Consumer Science
Plan of Work: Enhance Life Skills and Build Consumer Awareness...Financial
Outcome: Initial Outcome
We successfully introduced 236 4th grade students to the realities of financial and consumer education topics. Regardless of how much money a person has, it pays to manage it wisely. Youth learned the difference in a “want” and a “need,” how to create a budget, and how to get the most for the money spent. They had opportunities for positive youth development in our four guiding concepts: mastery, belonging, independence, and generosity. This program fosters mastery by learning wise consumer practices, decision-making, budgeting, how to prepare for an employable future; belonging by being part of a group with similar interests, independence by responsible spending, saving and investing; and generosity by serving in one’s community or supporting charitable causes.
