Trimble County Tobacco GAP Training

Author: Kevin Perkins

Planning Unit: Trimble County CES

Major Program: Tobacco

Plan of Work: Farmers learning to increase herd efficiency

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the last USDA census, Trimble County had 439 farms on 55,632 acres. This made up 57.3 % of the county land. In relation to total crop sales of $6,700,000, tobacco represented 42%. This makes it the number one cash crop in the county. Since that time tobacco production has declined. Many farmers have or are converting their tobacco acres into other areas of farming income. For those that haven't, they are required to take GAP(Good Agriculture Practices) Training. This training allows them to see the newest pesticides and farming practices for growers. With help from Dr. Bob Pearce from UK , local producers were invited to the Trimble County office on March 22, 2018, to be educated on all the current regulations and products.During the meeting producers were given new industry guidelines and procedures for the upcoming year. They also were educated on employment laws and rights of employees. This event brought in 22 producers from across the county and surrounding areas.
