Outcome: Initial Outcome

Campbell County parents of youth actively involved in 4-H, have expressed interest in programming that allow kids opportunities to learn basic kitchen skills. As a result of that request, a baking program was designed for Campbell County youth. Kentucky 4-H Curriculum, “4-H Cooking 101” and “4-H Cooking 201” were used to develop lessons and provide recipes for each of the sessions. Thirty-two middle school youth met via Zoom to bake along with an instructor. They completed a seven-session, once per month, baking class series. While completing each of these recipes, youth learned many basic kitchen and baking skills. Those skills included how to follow a recipe, how to measure wet and dry ingredients, how to cream butter and sugar, the importance of and when to sift flour, and how to knead and roll out dough. In addition to the basic baking skills, 100 percent of youth who completed the seven-session series indicated they feel more confident in the kitchen, and 88 percent of youth stated they plan to continue to use the skills they have learned.
