The Jessamine County Fair is a long-standing tradition both for 4-H and the entire county. Over the years, there has been a decline in entries of “Cloverville” projects. These are 4-H Projects, completed by a member, either individually or as part of a project group, and submitted for judging in the county fair. 2019 saw one of our lowest years of entries, with 110 entries being turned in. When the global pandemic hit in 2020, the 4-H program in Jessamine County got creative in order to allow youth to enter projects they worked on, even when the county fair was canceled. They planned and implemented a drive through drop off of county fair projects and received 181 entries. Building upon this, the Jessamine County 4-H Program decided to offer a 4-H Fair Project Series. The 4-H Fair Project Series consisted of 5 projects offered in the spring of 2021, virtually. Each project had a kit included with supplies, and either a work sheet or a video to help youth to know how to complete it. This series was advertised through our newsletter and through social media. 20 different youth completed projects. We also had 4 new families participate in the 4-H Project series and ultimately those new families brought projects to the county fair. In 2021 we had 230 total projects entered into the county fair 4-H section, in 83 different categories. This over 100% increase from 2019 was amazing! County fair projects teach mastery and independence for 4-H Youth. The 4-H Project Fair series will continue in 2022 with a combo of in person and virtual options.
