Montgomery County Seniors

Two of the challenges of low income older adults is to eat 3 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables, and to participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily.

Kentucky State University started a partnership with Montgomery Square Apartments, subsidized housing for the elderly, in August of 2017.

The SNAP-Ed Program Assistant presented the Eat Smart, Live Strong curriculum for them. The programming showed the participants ways to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables by adding them to some of their favorite meals. Another tip from this curriculum was promoting simple exercises. These were easy enough for them to do in their apartments and didn't require any special equipment.

All participants received goal sheets to help track how many fruits and vegetables, as well as how much physical activity, they were getting daily. 100% of the seniors completed the program and 36% from this group set goals for 4 weeks and have continued to use the tools from the program.
