I love going into the classrooms and teaching precious children. Cartmell Elementary houses second, third and fourth grade students. I am so fortunate that I am invited to teach all the children in this school. I am going to share two lessons that I have done this school year so far. The November lesson was on being thankful and the children was to stop and think of who they would like to thank. They were given a blank thank you note, markers, ink pads, thumb print images and an envelop to write a message to someone. They took this very seriously and some students were excited that the next week was Thanksgiving, where they could hand the card to their grandparents who would be visiting. It was a great written communication and expressive arts activity. They were thankful for some many people which included the food service workers at the school, their teacher, their bus driver, and varied family members.
Another lesson was the start of the 5 food groups, and we talked about fruits. I had taken oranges, pears, bananas, and apples into the classroom. The students turned the wheel and took a fruit from the basket matching where the wheel stopped. It was amazing the number of children who had never tasted a pear. They had a card with a fruit on it and stickers to make a happy face on their fruit and a copy of the recent “Chop Chop” magazine that was marketing fruits. The students really look forward to the magazine and can’t wait to do the search a word puzzle and to take them home. 100% of the students said they would eat more fruits.
